Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) and Stress-Oriented Hydrogen-induced Cracking (SOHIC) are failure mechanisms which are commonly found in oil and gas production, refining industry. This condition occurs e.g. where steel equipment is exposed to Wet Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) environments. The defects are caused when hydrogen blisters form, in turn causing cracks that link these blisters together into larger defects. Since the blisters form at various depths, the cracking will appear as a stair-step appearance, called “stepwise cracking” , eventually leading to surface breaking cracks.

Pros & Limitations
1
Reliable and cost effective working method
1
The dimensions and shape of laminations and/or cracks can be determined and visualized in millimetres
1
The detailed inspection report can be used to assess the condition and calculate the remaining service life (Fitness For Service Analysis (FFS))
1
High reproducibility of inspection
1
Experienced and trained staff
1
Non Intrusive Inspection (NII)
1
For most situations no shutdown required
0
Maximum inspection temperature 95° C - 180° C
